Low uncertainty flow measurement services for rivers, streams, or channels. Generation of rating curves in flow measurement sections and other studies and services.
The flow measurement service provided by Capta Hydro is adapted to the measurement needs of our clients based on their objectives. Depending on the requirements, the appropriate measurement and analysis strategy is chosen to minimize measurement uncertainty. The following are the steps involved in this type of consultancy.
The main applications of flow measurement services are as follows:
Point measurements are ideal for verifying ecological flows and passing flows in channels at a specific moment.
Loss studies estimate how much water is lost in different sections of a natural channel or canal. For this type of study, hydraulic times between different points must be determined to more accurately determine the amount of loss between two points. These studies may involve renting equipment for the study period.
Flow measurement structures generally have theoretical rating curves, which must be verified with several empirical flow measurements to have reliable curves throughout the flow range. This applies to all types of flumes (Parshall, Montana, cutthroat, etc.), artificial weirs (thick or thin wall), and weirs in natural channels.
Distribution structures are fixed structures for proportionally dividing the flow of a channel, but their theoretical proportion may deviate due to construction or operation effects. By measuring the flow in two branches of the incoming and outgoing flow, the actual proportion can be determined for one or more flow allocation levels, thus determining if civil works need to be modified for proper flow distribution.
Very versatile, ideal for non-uniform, turbulent, and steep sections. Low uncertainty (less than 5%).
Measurements between 10-10,000 L/s.
Channels with flows less than 10m3/s, turbulent rivers and streams, and channels with steep slopes that have a suitable location for salt mixing.
Ideal for uniform and calm sections. Low uncertainty following ISO748 guidelines. ADCP equipment provides more versatility (undefined geometries and locations without bridges), especially in wide channels.
Not feasible or high uncertainty in turbulent locations or with recirculating velocities.
All types of channels with uniform velocities and bridges that allow the introduction of the instrument across the entire width.
The main applications of flow measurement services are as follows:
Sociedad del Canal del Maipo (SCM), one of the main and oldest Canal User Associations in the country, has an extensive network of canals that crosses all of Santiago, from its intake from the Maipo River in Puente Alto, to almost all the municipalities of the capital to Colina and Pudahuel.
In 2019, we were tasked with conducting a flow measurement campaign in sections where there were no rating curves and in others where they needed to be updated.

The flow measurement campaigns carried out by Capta Hydro in our water distribution channels have allowed us to maintain the necessary accuracy to properly distribute water among our channels.
